DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team got back to its winning ways this evening in a battle against the Cardinals from Saint Mary's. The Saints jumped out to an early lead, taking a six-point lead into the half, and despite a Cardinals attempt to make a comeback, the Saints stood tall and came away with a 77-61 lead.
How it Happened
Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) scored the first two field goals for the Saints tonight, hitting a layup and a three-pointer, which would be followed by a three-pointer and jumper from Lexi Imdieke (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) moments later, as the Saints took a 11-2 lead.
The next two field goals came from Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) and Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS), respectively. Frase was able to score her first points on a jumper, and Carlson delivered a three-pointer, giving CSS a 16-2 lead.
Later in the opening quarter, the Saints got a pair of layups to fall, both coming from Carlson, as the Saints took a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.
After the Cardinals went on a brief run to open the second quarter, Katie Vaske (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS (Hamline University)) scored her first points of the night with a three-pointer, and Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) began her night scoring on a layup to give CSS a six-point lead.
Moments later, Johnson would hit her second shot from beyond-the-arc, and Vaske would get another layup to fall, extending the Saints' lead to 11 points.
Saint Mary's went on a 5-0 run to end the half, as the Saints held a 32-26 lead after one half of play.
The Saints got a pair of three-pointers to fall for its first points of the second half, coming courtesy of Johnson and Carlson, as the Saints held a 39-32 lead.
Carlson scored twice more on a pair of layups to help bring the Saints' lead to seven points.
Successful trips to the free throw line by Carlson and Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) would help give CSS a six-point cushion to head into the final quarter.
Johnson wasted no time getting going in the fourth quarter, as the sophomore dropped a layup and a three-pointer to make the score 59-50.
Layups from Lind and Voigt would help keep the pressure on for the Saints, as the Cardinals faced an 11-point deficit.
Closing out the game, the Saints got help from the free throw line, coming away with a 77-61 victory tonight over Saint Mary's.
