Duluth, Minn .– The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey team hosted the Auggies of Augsburg University tonight in the second game of a two-game series. The Saints' season was cut short last night in a loss to the Auggies, so they played the final game of the 2023-24 season with no hope of playoffs in sight. Tonight would end the same as last night, with the Saints giving it their all, and falling short, 3-5.
What Happened
The Saints went into senior night tonight with one goal, play some good hockey, and have fun doing it. They did just that, coming out strong in the first period. They would get outshot once again by the Auggies, 14-10, keeping the game fairly even in that regard, however, the Auggies were quick to score, ringing in a goal just 4:28 into the game.
The Saints would try to even the battle, but the Auggies would soon find themselves on a power-play, converting and scoring. The Saints' Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) would register a goal at the 16:17 mark, coming from Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS), making this a one-goal contest. At the end of 20 minutes, both teams were still in it.
Period two was a very high-scoring period, and with a lot of goals, came a lot of shots. We would certainly see that here. The Auggies would be held to just 11 shots on net this period, whereas the Saints would register 6.
Looking at that, it is safe to say both teams realized their respective competition was nothing to scoff at and kicked it up on defense. The first goal of the period would come in at the 7:08 mark, with LaRoche scoring an unassisted goal, momentarily tying the game.
The Auggies were very quick to take the lead, scoring just 18 seconds later. That was not it for the second period, the Auggies would see the back of the net again, on another powerplay, giving them another one goal lead at the 15:10 mark. The Auggies would close the period, scoring once again at the 18:41 mark, giving them a very comfortable three-goal cushion.
The final 20 minutes of play would see some of the hardest work of the game, as the Saints did not want to end the season on a bad note. Only one goal would be scored in these 20 minutes, that goal would not come until the 18:28 mark, Block would register the goal, assisted by LaRoche, and Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS).
Unfortunately, it was too little too late, the Saints would pull their goalie, Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) at the 1:04 mark, yet nothing would come from this. The game would come to an end, with a final score of 5-3.
Goaltending
Senior Arvidson would play 59:28 for the Saints, she faced 35 shots, and registered 30 saves.
Marissa Paaska, would play 54:05 for the Auggies, she faced 19 shots and registered 17 saves.
Charles Prior would play 5:55 for the Auggies, she faced two shots and registered one save.
End of Season
The Saints finish the 2023-24 Season with a record of 7-16-2 and a record of 6-10-2 in MIAC play. The Saints will say goodbye to seniors Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS), Lily Holtz (Austin, Minn./Austin HS), Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) Emily Sabol (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS), Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS), Jesse Ketola, Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS), and Lizzie Northquest (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS).
