DULUTH, Minn. - The College of St. Scholastica men's team tennis started their spring season with a border battle against Wisconsin-Superior on Friday evening. The Saints would be able one doubles point and two singles matches, but would fall to the Yellowjackets 6-3.
Doubles
The No. 1 pairing of
Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) and
Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au./) would have a heated battle, but would come short losing 8-7, 7-4.
The No. 2 pairing would be able to claim the victory over their opponents,Â
Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Julius Tabrizi (Frankfurt, Germany/Bischof-Neumann) won 8-2.
The last team ofÂ
Andy Shaffer (Buffalo, Minn./) and
Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS) dropped their contest 8-4.
Singles
Abeleda would fall in the first set 6-4 and then come back winning 6-3, the match would go into a superbreaker where Abeleda would lose 10-6.
In No. 2 singles, Gerrard-Stace would fall 6-4, 6-2 and first-year player Patten would take his match in the tiebreaker going 6-4, 4-6, 1-0.
Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) andÂ
Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn./)Â in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots both saw defeat.
While in the last spot for the Saints,Â
Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn./)Â was able to fight for his win. His opponent would take the first match 7-6, but Onkka would earn the second set 6-4 and then come away with 10-8 victory.

The Saints are now 1-2 and will head to their home away from home in Virginia, Minn., at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club. They'll face the Cobbers of Concordia College at 4 p.m.
