Volleyball Falls in Homecoming Match

Duluth, MN.- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team hosted their second MIAC game of the year in the Reif Gymnasium. This match was against the College of Saint Benedict at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 5, and was a tough loss for the Saints as they were defeated 3-1. 

How it Happened

Set 1

The Saints started off set one strong by gaining the first two points after a kill from Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS). The Saints and Bennies went on to battle for points and stayed within one of each other till point seven in the set.

After trailing 6-7 against the Bennies, the Saints stepped up and went on a five-point run, with kills from Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) and Baribeau. 

St. Scholastica continued to fight and as the Bennies pulled away with the set. A kill from Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, WI/Bloomer HS) and a service ace from Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) allowed the Saints to gain another lead over the Bennies at 15-12 leading to a CSB timeout. 

Jones came out of the timeout and earned another kill for the Saints followed by a kill from Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) to extend the lead over Saint Benedict. 

At 19-19, Ava Swangatue ended the Bennies' run with a kill assisted by Myhre. Myhre then had her own kill to bring the score to 19-20.

St. Scholastica however fell to Saint Benedict late in the first set 25-21 resulting in a Bennies lead of 1-0 sets. 

Set 2

Set two started hot with two exhilarating kills from Jones and Peterson to put the Saints ahead 2-0. 

The Bennies went on a small run leading 7-4 until Jones reclaimed the energy on the court with another kill for the Saints. The Saints freshman stayed energized recording the next three kills for the Saints. 

After two consecutive kills for Swangstue, the Saints were again ahead of CSB 17-15. The game was tied at 18-18 after yet another kill from Jones. 

St. Scholastica took the lead and 23-18 over the Bennies after a service ace for Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) and a kill for Swangstue. 

The Saints took set two 25-22 off of a Bennie error and tied the match up 1-1. 

Set 3

St. Scholastica repeated the pattern and started off the third set 2-0 over Saint Benedict. The Saints continued this momentum and were up 9-5 after a service ace from Ziegler. 

The Bennies had many errors that allowed the Saints to stay ahead in the set. Lustig recorded another kill for the match to give the Saints a 14-12 lead halfway through the third set. 

Jones continued to play aggressively and get two more kills over the Bennies which had the Saints leading 19-17 late in the set. 

Baribeau had two more kills in the third set but it wasn't enough to secure the win and the Saints fell again to the Bennies 25-23.

Set 4

The Saints took an early lead in set four with three kills from all the front-row hitters to put them ahead 3-2.

After falling behind to the Bennies the Saints regained momentum from multiple errors across the net. Baribeau and Jones took advantage of this opportunity and had two kills for the Saints bringing them to only a four-point deficit.

With a score of 24-16 in favor of the Bennies, the Saints server Zigler went on a three point run to try and close the gap between them. 

The Saints fell just short of victory in the fourth set with a loss of 25-19 and a match loss of 3-1. 

Up Next

The Saints will play their next game on the road in Menomonie, WI. against UW-Stout on Tuesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. This will be a non-conference matchup.
