Box Score Menomonie, WI.- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team was on the road for a non-conference game against the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, WI. on Tuesday, October 8. The game commenced at 7 p.m. and the Saints battled in five sets to take home a victory for the evening.
How it Happened
Set 1
The Saints started set one with a 3-1 lead over the Blue Devils after many errors on the opposing side. While fighting to keep this lead, Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) had a crucial kill to keep the Saints ahead 5-2.
As the set continued, both teams struggled to create a gap and pull away. Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, WI/Bloomer HS) was a stud hitter for the Saints as she recorded two kills back to back giving the team a two point lead at 9-7.
St. Scholastica continued a back and forth battle for points with Stout throughout the set until multiple errors were made on the Blue Devils side. A massive block from the Saints, Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS), and Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) brought the team back into range only trailing 19-21.
Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) sparked the fire on the Saints side after tying the set at 24-24 with a huge kill assisted by Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS).
With a kill from Swangstue the Saints were victorious in the first set winning 27-25 over the Blue Devils.
Set 2
Peterson started set two with a smart kill from outside to tie the game 1-1 early on. The Saints struggled after this to find an outlet to score and fell behind the Blue Devils early on.
The Freshman Lustig finally found a scoring opportunity and recorded a kill for the team at 4-8.
After an error on the Blue Devil side, Jones found two more opportunities to score giving the Saints a three-point run at 7-17.
The Saint fell to the Blue Devils in set two 25-12 and headed into set three.
Set 3
Entering set three the Saints were profiting off the many errors the Blue Devils were making and led 4-2 early on.
Swangstue and Peterson recorded the first two kills of the set for the Saints making the score 6-13.
The Saints regained energy after the powerful duo of Myhre and Baribeau recorded back to back points for the team placing the score at 10-18.
St. Scholastica could not hold onto their momentum from the hitters and lost the third set 12-25.
Set 4
The Saints could not be held down for long and came into set four with a fire underneath them. Madelyn Swanson (Andover, Mn/Andover High School) recorded the first kill of the set followed by two consecutive kills from Baribeau to put the Saints ahead 3-2.
Myhre continued assisting her hitters and fed Lustig back to back balls giving the Saints two more points and a continuance of the lead at 5-3.
Both teams fought for each point and the score was tied on almost every exchange. The Saints however went on a four-point run at 13-12 after a kill from Jones led to many Blue Devil errors.
Continued pressure was applied from the Saints offense with kills from Jones and Swangstue leaving the Saints ahead 21-18 late in the set.
A service ace from Myhre sealed the deal for the Saints at 25-23 as they headed into the fifth set against the Blue Devils.
Set 5
Set five started nothing less than intense after the Saints led 2-0 with a kill from Jones.
Going point for point with the Blue Devils, Saints hitters were finding any opportunity to put the ball away. With kills from Baribeau and Swanson the Saints, they led at 4-3.
With the Saints trailing 9-5, Swanson found a defensive gap on the Blue Devils' side recording another kill for the Saints. This was followed by a kill from the Saints setter Myhre to put the team only down two at 8-10.
The Saints were trailing on match point for the Blue Devils (14-10) but a kill from Jones relit the fire under the St. Scholastica team. After a four-point run for the Saints, with two more kills for Jones, the Saints were leading 15-14 late in the set.
Tied at 15-15 the Saints offense, Swanson and Baribeau, finished the set at 17-15 winning the match three sets to two.

The St. Scholastica volleyball team will be on the road again this week for a conference matchup against Gustavus Adolphus College who is currently 3-0 in the MIAC. This game will be Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. in St. Peter, MN.
