Volleyball Falls to the Gusties

Duluth, MN.- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team traveled south to St. Peter, MN to play in a conference matchup against the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m. Friday, October 11. Coming off a win the Saints were eager to do it again but ultimately ended in a 0-3 loss. 

How it Happened

Set 1 

Saints started strong with two kills in a row, the first by Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) and the second by Kassidy Lustig.

The Gusties' first point resulted from a service ace from Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, WI/Bloomer HS), taking the game 2-1. A battle for points commenced as it was back and forth with the Gusties taking the lead of the set. 

The score was set at 9-15 Gusties, the Saints got the following two points off of service errors from Gustavus making it 11-15. 

The Saints get their last two points of the set off of a kill from Jones and a service ace from Grace Mhyre taking it to 19-23

The Gusties end the match with a win of 19-25 off of a service error from Baribeau. Set one ended with the Saints trailing in kills 9-13.  

Set 2 

Starting on a roll once again the Saints take the lead 2-0 off of two attack errors from the Gusties. 

After the Saint's strong start, both teams went back and forth, trading points until the Saints scored two forcing the Gustavus timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, the Gusties went on a 4-0 run tying up the game at 9-9. 

Both teams once again began trading points eventually getting the score up to 14-17. The Saints were ultimately forced to regroup then with a timeout as well. 

The timeout would end and so too would the second set, in the same way, the set was played this far, both teams trading off points, Gustavus was eventually able to get the edge, securing the 22-25. 

Set 3 

The Gusties had the first serve as they committed another error giving the Saints the first point of the game. 

The Saints 1-0 lead didn't last long, the Saints committed a service error on their first serve of the game, followed by a Gustavus kill.

The teams would exchange points until the Gusties went on a 6-point run. The Saints then scored two more points before the Gusties scored another four together. 

The Saints tried to find a rhythm, scoring three more points, with a point between those by Gustavus. The Gusties kept the tempo up, scoring four more points after. 

The Saints had brief moments of hope, but every time they scored a point the Gusties responded with two points. This ended the 3rd set with a final score of 11-25. 

The Saints as a result lost the game by losing the three sets in a row. 

Up Next

The Saints will head West to the border to play the Cobbers of Concordia College (Minn) in yet again another conference matchup at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12.
