MOORHEAD, Min. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell for just the second time this season tonight in a hard-fought matchup against the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead. After the first period went scoreless, the Saints scored quickly in the second period, only to be outdone, as the Cobbers scored twice in the period, en route to a 2-1 victory over CSS.
How it Happened
Early in the period, the Saints offense got started early, but the early chances would be for not, as the Cobbers were able to shut down the Saints offense.
On the other side for the Saints, Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) did the same against the Cobber offense, stopping all 10 shots the senior goalie faced.
After an evenly matched first period without any goals, the Saints jumped out to a quick start in the second period, with Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) recording his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), as the Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, the Cobbers snuck one by Bostedt, tying the game at 1-1 in the early minutes of the second period.
After a Cobber shot that was blocked by Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), Concordia-Moorhead scored its second goal of the period, taking a 2-1 lead midway through the second period.
Leading 2-1 in the third period, the Cobbers were handed a two-minute penalty that put the Saints on the powerplay. However, despite three great attempts, the Saints could not find the back of the net and the score remained 2-1.
Later in the period, the Saints once again fired a number of shots at the net, but were unable to tie the game. In the late moments, the Saints pulled its goalie for a chance to use the man advantage to tie the game.
The Saints were able to get a pair of late shots off, but the Cobbers came away with a 2-1 victory over St. Scholastica.
