NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team made the trip to Northfield this evening to take on the Oles from St. Olaf. The Saints led by one at halftime, but a late second half push from the Oles would be the difference, as St. Olaf defeated the Saints by a score of 66-58.
How it Happened
After the Oles began the game on a 13-2 run, with Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) scoring on a layup for CSS, the Saints got help from Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) to cut into the early deficit.
Nelson would hit his second three-pointer of the game with just under nine minutes to play in the first half to keep the Saints within striking distance.
Later in the half, Nelson and Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) would continue to be sparks for the Saints offense, with Nelson hitting two jumpers and a layup and Moore converting a layup, as the Saints took its first lead of the night.
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) would get his night started with a jumper with four minutes to play, as the score sat at 26-23.
To close out the first half, the Saints got a trio of layups to fall, courtesy of Moore, Nelson, and Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College), as the Saints took a 32-31 lead into halftime.
CSS opened the second half offensively with a jumper from Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)) and a three-pointer by Thomas, tying the game at 37-37.
Minutes later, Nelson and Overstreet would both score on jumpers that put CSS in front 47-46.
Nelson would score once again on a three-pointer, and Moore would follow it up with a jumper a few minutes later, but the Oles now held a 57-52 lead.
Despite the Saints getting jumpers from Moore and Washington in the late stages of the game, the Oles were able to come away with a 66-58 victory over CSS this evening.
