ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's volleyball team (2-13, 0-3 MIAC) played in their third MIAC match of the season and similar to their contest against Carleton, CSS would start strong early and take the first set before the College of Saint Benedict (11-4, 4-0 MIAC) grabbed three sets in a row.
How it Happened
The Saints saw themselves down early, a kill by
Natalie Yackley (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm HS) would start a 5 point streak, which allowed them to catch up and be tied at 8 apiece. The two squads would trade 3-0 runs with each other and continue going back-and-forth. The Bennies would take a 17-14 lead until
Delaney Schaeffer (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) would secure a kill and
Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) would score right after. The Bennies would again crawl back and tie the score at 18. CSS would go on another 5-0 run and then be able to hold off their opponents to take the first set with a 25-22 final score.
In the second, the Saints would start in the front early leading 4-1, but the Bennies and Saints would continue to do battle and once again the score would be tied at 10. CSB would continue to score points and
Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) would score the Saints 18th point, but the Bennies would close it out in the next play and tie the game at 1-1, winning 25-18 in set two.
The third set would go in favor of the foes,
Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) would be able to stop a six point run with a kill, but CSB would cruise to the end of the third set, grabbing it 25-14. The fourth and final set was another strong outing for the Bennies as they were up 17-6. CSS would go on a 3-0 run including kills from
Emma Fretheim (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS). The Saints wouldn't go down easily, they would see some spark as they went on a 6-0 run, and be able to slowly catch up to only be down by one as the Bennies had 22 on the scoreboard. Although, CSB would be able to hold off another set a take the game with a 25-22 win.
Top Performers
Baribeau and Swangstue would both have nine kills on the evening, Bariebeau would also have three blocks. Leading the team in digs was
Olivia Bauer (Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) with 21, Peterson followed with 12 and Yackley recorded 11 digs. Once again,
Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) had a career-high in assists with an impressive 34 assists.

The Saints will be back in Duluth next weekend with a pair of conference games, on Friday, October 6 they will face Gustavus at 7 p.m. and then play Concordia on Saturday, October 7 at 5 p.m.
