MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's volleyball team had a pair of matches this Saturday (Sept. 23) against MIAC opponent Augsburg Auggies and a non-conference game versus Luther College. Both matches would see some close sets, including going into two extended sets with the Norse, but ultimately the Saints would fall in both matches.
CSS 0, AUG 3
The Auggies struck early,
Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) and
Delaney Schaeffer (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) scored for the Saints as they were down 4-3. Augsburg would go on a 4-0 run and 5-0 rally, with the Saints scoring a few points in between. A kill from
Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) saw CSS only down 20-16 now, but the Auggies were able to secure set one 25-19.
A kill from Baribeau and a service ace from
Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) would see CSS up by two early, two more kills by Baribeau had the Saints up 4-2. The Auggies slowly started to get back into the set with some points and regain the lead. After a CSS timeout to regroup, Schaeffer would secure a kill for the Saints' tenth point, compared to the Auggies' fourteen. The foes started to heat up and closed things quickly with a 25-13 score.
The Saints have typically started strong early in their matches, but this time CSS would battle with their conference opponents to the very end as the two teams were tied at 3 and 5 early, and two errors by Augsburg would have the Saints in the lead 8-6. Although, that wouldn't last long as the Auggies were able to score eight straight.
With the Saints down 23-16,
Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) notched a kill, followed by another by
Emma Fretheim (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS), and a Myhre point. Swangstue would again attack with a kill,
Olivia Bauer (Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) then delivered back-to-back service aces to get her team back in the set and down by one (23-24). Augsburg found a way to earn the final point and grab the set, winning the match 3-0.

Natalie Yackley (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm HS) earned a kill, but the Norse were still leading 22-18 and would close things out to take the first set 25-20.Â
Although the Saints never led in set two, they kept fighting and eventually tied it up at 24 apiece. Luther would earn a point, but Baribeau would tie things back up at 25. Unfortunately the Norse got a free point off of an error by CSS and grabbed the set with a service ace at 27-25.Â
Once again, the final set saw the Saints with a ton of effort, including 10 ties between both squads. The Saints saw themselves down by five but scored an impressive seven points straight to lead 22-20 now, Luther would answer back with two points,
