DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team took on the Polars from Crown College today in its home opener. The Saints took care of business today, shutting down the Polars offense, while also gaining 535 yards of offense, while defeating Crown by a score of 38-18.
How it Happened
The Saints' first drive of the game started with Donald West (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury HS (Iowa Central)) hitting multiple receivers, gaining 23 yards in the early moments of the drive. Later in the drive, West was able to gain 11 yards using his legs before finding Kione Roberson (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Cypress Creek) on a touchdown pass, as CSS took a 7-0 lead.
Although the Saints did not find the endzone on its next drive, Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS) had a great play for CSS, gaining 45 yards on a reception on the drive.
Right before the end of the quarter, Roberson was able to record 33 yards on three rushing attempts, while Connor Donovan (Maple Plain, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) got his name into the scorebook, recording a 15-yard reception.
After West connected with Ricky Webber for a 15-yard gain, Anthony Vo (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville HS) found himself in the endzone on a rare rushing attempt, as CSS now led 14-0 over Crown.
The Saints extended its lead in the second quarter, as Roberson found the endzone on a 66-yard gain, extending the lead to 21-0.
CSS saw the lead grow once again on its next drive, as a Jacob Andrews (Owatonna, Minn./Medford HS) field goal put the Saints up 24-0.
On CSS' last drive of the half, West was able to gain yards both passing and rushing. After gaining 20 yards on the ground, West found Benjamin Hunter (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) for a 19-yard gain, and capped the drive off with a touchdown pass to Weber. The Saints went into halftime with a 31-0 lead over crown.
Halfway through the third quarter, West capped off a Saints 13-play, 85 yard drive with a passing touchdown to Hunter to see the Saints' lead grow to 38-0.
Crown scored on the final drive of the quarter, but it was merely a crack in the lead, as St. Scholastica still led 38-6.
Crown found the endzone two more times in the fourth quarter, but the Saints' lead was too much to handle, as St. Scholastica defeated Crown today by a score of 38-18.
Head Coach Mike Heffernan felt that the preparation that went into this week's matchup was key to the success of CSS today. "The guys and coaches did a good job preparing this week, and I'm really proud of the way they competed today. We were successful because of everyone's hard work."
Defending Home Field
The Saints will be at home once again next weekend, as they will host the Cobbers from Concordia next weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
