WINONA, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica volleyball team began its season with a pair of matches at the St. Mary's University Sugar Loaf Classic Tournament. The Saints would defeat Lawernece in all three sets, giving Chelsea Meierotto her first win as the Saints' head coach in their very first match. The second game would see CSS fall to the Cougars of the University of Minnesota Morris, 3-0.

CSS 3, Lawrence 0

Their first opponent would be Lawrence University, a team they haven't played since 2014. Earning the first point on the new season off a service ace was Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS). Leading 12-9 in the first set, the Saints would heat up and score seven points straight and eventually win it 25-17.

The second set would also see the Saints jump out to a 7-0 run on the Vikings, CSS would have a game-high of 14 kills in this set to give them the 25-16 victory. The Saints kept things rolling as Emma Fretheim (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) would close things out with a kill to grab the 25-14 win and with their first match of the season in three-straight sets.

Olivia Bauer (Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) led the Saints with 10 kills and Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) followed with seven. Myhre added 25 assists throughout the match, and Bauer recorded 16 digs for CSS.

Meierotto said this following her first win with her new squad, "It was good to be out on the court competing, as it's always fun getting back to competition mode. We are getting more comfortable playing together and focusing on small corrections for consistency."

CSS 0, UMM 3

Minnesota Morris would get the first point to start the set, and eventually go up 9-4 until a kill by Delaney Schaeffer (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) got the Saints' momentum back and the Saints would lead 13-11 in the middle of the first set. The Cougars would rally late and grab the first set 25-20.

The second set would see the Saints start hot early with CSS leading 7-3, the Cougars kept crawling back, but a kill from Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) would still keep CSS in the lead 14-10. UMM would go on a 5-0 run and the game went down to the last few volleys as both teams were tied 23-23. The Cougars would grab the last two points and take the second set 25-23.

The final set saw the two teams once again trade leads early, but a 7-0 Cougar run would eventually lead to a 25-13 win and the match. Baribeau and Swangstue would both lead the team with six kills, Myhre would again lead the team with 17 assists, and Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) would record 15 digs on the night.

The 1-1 Saints will be back in action to wrap up the SMU Sugar Loaf Classic Tournament with two more games. CSS will face Wisconsin-La Crosse at 9 a.m. and Elmhurst University at 11 a.m.
