Men’s Tennis Start 2023 with 1-1 Record

Eau Claire, Wis.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opened up the 2023 portion of their season with two non-conference matches at the Eau Claire YMCA on Saturday. First they saw UW-Stevens Point, winning the match 9-0 and then played UW-Eau Claire, where the team fell 9-0.

CSS vs UWSP

Doubles
The Saints won all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) and Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au.) winning 8-4. 

The No. 3 team of Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS) won 8-1.

Singles
In singles play, the Saints won all of their six matches. Abeleda won at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-4, 6-2. 

Newcomer Julius Tabrizi (Frankfurt, Germany/Bischof-Neumann) won via a superbreaker at the No. 2 spot, by scores of 6-3, 7-6, (9-7).

Riley Versich (Kelly Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS (Itasca CC)) and Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) both cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.

Lastly, Nicolas Greis Coria (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Trinnean's School) won 6-4, 6-3.

CSS vs UWEC

Doubles
The Saints would flip the script as they would fall to all three double matches. 

Partners Jace Westerbur (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Daigneault and teammates Tabrizi and Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn.) would both fall 8-4 in their matches. 

Singles
In singles play, the Saints wouldn't be able to grab a win in the six matches.

Abeleda fought hard at the No. 1 spot, but ultimately lost by scores of 6-5, 6-5.

At the No. 4 spot Versich was defeated by the superbreaker, by scores 6-2, 7-6, (7-3).

Up Next
The Saints will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action when they face Macalester College on Friday (Feb. 10). Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
