MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey played their final regular season game at home Friday night against Augsburg University. They would need two wins to give them a chance at a late playoff run at the No.5 or No.6 spot. Unfortunately with the Friday defeat and the 5-2 loss tonight as well as St. Catherine and Hamline picking up wins, CSS would just be outside the playoff berth landing in the number seventh spot. Last year the Saints secured the fourth spot in the playoffs, this will be their first year missing the playoffs in the new conference.
How it Happened
The first period would end up scoreless even with the Saints having two power-play opportunities. The Saints would have a total of 10 shots on goal, compared to the Auggies nine.
The second period would be where the action started to pick up. About eight minutes in, Jessie Ketola (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelly HS) would put her team on the scoreboard first. Senior Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had the assist. Moments later the Auggies would fire four consecutive shots in a row, they were all saved by Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS). The last save would bring stoppage, Auggies would win the faceoff and then score seconds later. The game was tied 1-1.
Four minutes now remained in the second, the Auggies would take the lead with another goal. Two minutes later a holding call would go against the Saints, letting Augsburg score on a power-play goal, making the game 3-2 in favor of Augsburg. Twenty-two seconds later the Saints would answer right back with a quick score. Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) would get the unassisted goal as the Saints were now down by one heading into the third.
The Saints would get a chance to tie this game up at 13:45, as they would on a power-play. The saints would get a shot from Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and two from Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) although their shots were blocked or saved. As the game went on, CSS would look to add an extra skater, pulling Arvidson at 3:54. A minute later Augsburg would add an empty net goal and with eleven seconds left they would score again on an open net. The Auggies would take both games this weekend as they grabbed the 5-2 win tonight.
Goaltending
Arvidson would have 38 saves for the Saints. Mara McClain evening recorded 25 for Augsburg.
