MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – In a thrilling road matchup for the St. Scholastica men's basketball team this evening, the Saints came up victorious, behind a big second half against the Augsburg Auggies. The Saints captured its second consecutive win for the first time this season, and its sixth victory overall.
First Half
Both teams took turns scoring baskets early, as
Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) and
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) got early baskets, as Augsburg led 6-4 in the early stages.
A layup by
Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) and a pair of buckets from
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) gave CSS its first lead, leading 10-8.
The Auggies tied the game at 12-12 moments later, but the Saints recaptured the lead, courtesy of a layup by
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
Carlson and
Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North High School (Dakota County Technical College)) scored moments later to help keep CSS' lead at two points.
After Augsburg tied the game at 18-18, Yohanes Gebeyehu hit a big three-pointer, to make the score 21-18.
A jumper by Carlson was CSS' last field goal of the half, as Augsburg led 29-26 at halftime.
Second Half
The Saints wasted no time in the early moments of the second half to get going, as Carlson scored on a dunk, Raymond got a jumper to fall, and Hendrickson drilled a three-pointer, to tie the game at 33-33.
A three by Bich gave CSS a one-point lead over the Auggies with 12 and a half minutes to play.
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) hit his first three-pointer of the game, with 10 minutes to play, to take a 50-49 lead.
With six minutes to play, Bich got a jumper to go, which tied the game at 54-54.
After the Auggies reclaimed its lead, Carlson converted an and-one, to give CSS' its lead back, leading 57-56.
After Carlson tied the game at 59-59, Bich stepped up with a layup of his own, giving the Saints a two-point lead.
After getting fouled on a three-point attempt,
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) stepped to the line to give CSS a lead. The junior guard did not disappoint, drilling all three free throw attempts, taking a three-point lead in the process.
The Auggies scored a late basket, but CSS hit its free throws to ice the game, defeating the Auggies by a score of 66-63.
Top Performers
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) led the Saints in the scoring department, recording 17 points, while also grabbing 10 boards.
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added 11 points, including clutch free throws, and
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS),
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), and
Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) all added nine points each.
