NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell this afternoon taking on the Knights from Carleton in a conference matchup. The Saints trailed by just five at halftime, but the Knights were able to pull away in the late moments of the second half, defeating CSS by a score of 68-51.
How it Happened
The Saints jumped out to an early lead, as Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the opening five points and Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS (Dakota County Technical College)) scored on a layup, giving CSS an early 7-4 lead.
After the Knights tied the game at 7-7, Winesett scored a pair of baskets, including a three-pointer, to give the Saints its five point lead back.
A layup from Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and a pair of jumpers from Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) gave CSS a 19-14 lead midway through the second half.
The Saints last two field goals of the half came from a three-pointer by Thomson and a jumper by Ojullu, but the Knights were able to reclaim the lead late in the half, going on a 12-1 run to lead 30-25 at halftime.
Ojullu kickstarted the second half for CSS, converting an and-one which was followed with a Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) layup that cut the deficit to just one point.
Carleton went on a 8-0 run before Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) scored on a layup for CSS, as the score sat at 39-32.
Winesett and Thomas would respond for CSS, with Winesett hitting one from beyond-the-arc, and Thomas getting a jumper to fall, as the Saints still trailed 41-37.
Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) got his first field goal to fall, and Thomson scored a layup of his own, as Carleton's lead was trimmed to 43-41.
Thomson scored the next two field goals for the Saints, but in the meantime, Carleton built its lead up to 15, leading 60-45.
Ojullu would score the last three field goals for CSS, but the deficit was too much for a comeback, as the Knights came away with a 68-51.

The Saints (1-7, 0-5) will get a break before its next matchup, which will take place on December 28th, where they will travel to Daytona, Florida to take part in the Florida Sunshine Shootout. The Saints will play Ramapo College, tip off time is to be announced.
