What Happened
Tonight, the Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey team traveled to Saint Joseph, to face off against the Bennies of Saint Ben's. The game featured some great action on both sides of the ice, both teams were neck-and-neck through the first, the Saints would put up 14 shots and only give the Bennies 15 shots. The first period gave us some great scoring opportunities as well as some great defensive plays. Unfortunately, we would let up one goal in this period giving the Bennies a one-goal lead early on in the game, unable to tie it before the period ended. Â
The second period would offer a little more in the scoring department. We would see a goal only two minutes in scored by Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) to tie the game up 1-1. That goal was followed by another Bennies goal giving them the lead once again in the second period. After the Bennies second goal, we would see Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) scoring a goal to once again tie the game up 2-2 with just over four minutes remaining in the period. The Bennies would put up more shots than the Saints in this period with 20 shots on net as opposed to the Saints 14.Â
The third period was a tough one tonight for the Saints. The Saints put up some great shots in an effort to secure the lead. The Bennies would score twice in the third period giving them a two goal lead. The Saints would pull their Goalie with two minutes remaining in the third period to give them a one-skater advantage in an effort to close the Bennies lead and tie the game. During this advantage, the Saints would suffer a penalty forcing the Saints to send their Goalie back into the net. This Bennies power play would score, giving the Bennies a three goal lead with 23 seconds remaining in the game. The period would come to a close with a final score of 5-2 in favor of the Bennies.Â
