DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team hosted for the second time in three days, the Gusties from Gustavus. Both teams traded goals through the midway point in the third period, but CSS scored two goals in the late minutes of the third period, to hold on to a 4-3 victory and a series sweep over Gustavus.
How it Happened
The Saints offense didn't waste any time breaking the scoreless tie, as Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) scored just a minute and twelve seconds into the opening period, to take a 1-0 lead over the Gusties.
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) got the start in the net for the Saints, as the senior faced a boatload of shots from the Gusties midway through the period, but the score remained at 1-0.
Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) and Jack Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS) were also key in the first period, as the duo made a pair of blocks, keeping the Gusties off the board.
Late in the first period, the Gusties found the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1 heading into the second period.
St. Scholastica's penalty kill team shined, killing an early Saints penalty as the score remained at 1-1.
Later in the period, the Saints broke through on the powerplay, as Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS) scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) and Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), giving CSS a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
After a handful of shots were stopped by Bostedt, the Gusties found a way to get one by Bostedt, tying the game at 2-2 with nine minutes left to play.
Just minutes later, Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS) scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Michael Makarenko (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Foot Hills Composite HS (Concordia University Wisconsin NCHA)), as CSS was just minutes away from victory.
A minute after the Saints got its third goal, CSS would get another, this time from Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), as this goal would be the game-winning goal. Richels got assists from F. Ledenkov and Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya), giving the Saints a 4-2 lead.
The Gusties got a goal back after pulling its goalie, but the Saints would hold on in the final seconds, securing a 4-3 series sweep over Gustavus.

The Saints (5-0-0, 2-0-0) look to continue its hot start to the season, as they will travel to Collegeville to take on the Johnnies from St. John's on Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
