DULUTH, Minn. – Fresh off an impressive 2022-23 campaign, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team opened up its season this evening, taking on Wisconsin-Superior. CSS jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, followed up with the first two goals of the second period. The Yellowjackets made a comeback attempt, scoring four unanswered goals, but the Saints were able to seal the deal with two goals late, taking tonight's matchup by a score of 6-4.
How it Happened
The Yellowjackets came out with an aggressive offensive approach, firing shots at Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS), but the senior goaltender was able to record some early saves.
Just minutes later, St. Scholastica broke the 0-0 tie with a goal by Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), off of assists from Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) and Issac Suppin, to take a 1-0 lead.
Right before the end of the period, CSS struck again, this time coming off the stick of Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS), assisted by Braeden Holcomb (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Just a little under two minutes into the second period, the Saints found the back of the net, as Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS) scored on the powerplay, coming on assists by Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) and Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS).
Already leading 3-0 midway through the second period, St. Scholastica recorded its fourth unanswered goal, as Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) put his name into the scorebook, with assists from Adrian and Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS), to make it 4-0 in favor of CSS.
The Yellowjackets were not going to go down without a fight however, scoring late in the second period and early in the third period to cut its deficit to 4-2.
The Saints lead vanished in the third period, when the Yellowjackets scored two more goals, tying the game at 4-4.
Just moments after the Yellowjackets tied the game at 4-4, Girod scored what would be the game-winning goal shorthanded, as CSS now led 5-4.
In the late moments of the third period, the Yellowjackets pulled its goalie in an attempt to spark a comeback. The Saints however, had other plans, scoring an empty net goal by Arkhip , with an assist going to his twin brother Filimon.
Goaltending
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) earned his first victory of the young campaign, stopping 30 Yellowjackets shots en route to the win.
