DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team remains undefeated in the year 2023. This afternoon they claimed the series sweep as they defeated Concordia College-Moorhead 5-2 in Saturday's contest.
How it Happened
After Friday's excitement of action and plenty of goals, it may have shown a little, as things started slowly for both teams. With just under a minute left the Cobbers fired three consecutive shots in the Saints zone and finally the fourth one hit, as the Cobbers scored first.
Saint's wouldn't allow their opponents to have the lead for too long, 1:20 into the second period Jacob Seitz would score off a power-play. The game was now tied 1-1, and the junior from Roseau, Minn., Nathan Adrian had the assist, along with Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS(University of New Hampshire)). Just with things tied up, the Cobbers would regain the lead a few minutes later, the Saints now trailed by a goal.
With 3:49 remaining in the second period, the Saints were again on a power-play when Arkhip Ledenkov scored, and the assists were by Filimon Ledenkov and Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)). The Saints would once again tie up the game 2-2. It wouldn't take long for another Saint score as Richels put the puck in the net at 2:45. The Ledenkov twins had the assists, and the Saints ended the period up 3-2.
The Saints scored early to start the third, at 17:52, Arkhip scored from the far circle to secure his second goal of the game, and fourth for the weekend series. Filimon and Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Wichita Falls-NAHL)) were handed the assists.
The Saints now leading 4-2, and it would stay that way until the end of the game. The Cobbers, who would empty their net on and off, tried for a quick score during the last few minutes. The Saints took advantage of the empty net with a score by Adrian with just a few ticks on the clock remaining. Seitz and Richels were credited with the assists. The final goal secured the 5-2 victory and weekend sweep over the Cobbers.
