DULUTH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team hosted the Auggies from Augsburg University this evening. CSS struggled from the field, shooting just 33.9 percent, as Augsburg built off of the Saints' struggles, as the Auggies defeated CSS this evening by a score of 70-48.
First Half
Augsburg opened the game with a 9-0 lead over CSS before
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) got the scoring started for the Saints.
Augsburg expanded its lead, leading 14-2, when
Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) hit a three-pointer, which was followed up by jumpers by
Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Carlson, to make the score 16-9.
Just over halfway through the first half,
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) etched his name into the scorebook, hitting a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six, as Augsburg led 19-13.
With six and a half minutes to play in the first half,
Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) found the bottom of the net on a layup, assisted by Thomas, to make the score 22-15.
Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North High School (Dakota County Technical College)) made his presence be felt on the next couple of possessions, as he got a layup to fall and on the ensuing possession, got a thrilling dunk to cut the deficit to 10.
Carlson and Ojullu closed out the half scoring wise for the Saints, as Carlson hit a jumper and Ojullu a layup, as Augsburg took a 32-23 lead into halftime.
Second Half
Augsburg expanded its lead to 13 points in the early minutes of the second half, until Carlson got a layup to fall, making the score 37-26.
After a Bich steal,
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got his first three-pointer to go on the next Saints possession, cutting CSS' deficit down to single-digits.
Just a minute later, Bich got another three-pointer to fall, as well as a layup, to get CSS to a seven-point deficit, trailing 42-35.
After a pair of free throws by
Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS), Augsburg broke the game open, going on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, to give them a 15-point lead.
With right around four minutes to play, Thomas got another three to go, but CSS trailed heavily, as the score sat 60-42.
In the closing minutes, the Saints got jumpers from
Koy Nelson (Port Wing, WI/South Shore High School), Moore, and Russell, but Augsburg took today's matchup by a score of 70-48.

The Saints fall to 3-8 on the season and now stand at 2-4 in conference play after the loss today. They will be back in action next on Saturday, where they will travel to St. Paul to take on Macalester. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
