Second Half Struggles Factor as Men’s Basketball Falls to Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team traveled to St. Paul this afternoon to take on the Scots from Macalester in a conference matchup. The Saints took a one-point lead into the second half, but the Scots caught fire in the second half and ultimately defeated CSS in today's matchup by a score of 69-55.
 
First Half
In the opening minutes of today's game, Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) got a couple of jumpers to fall, to give CSS an early 4-0 lead.
 
After the Scots claimed the lead on a 9-0 run, Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) hit a three-pointer, on an assist from Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS), to make it a 9-7 game.
 
Around the nine minute mark, Yohanes Gebeyehu found the bottom of the net with a jumper of his own, as CSS trailed 11-9.
 
Following a Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) layup, Winesett and Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) both helped trimmed the lead, as Winesett converted a layup, Thomas a three-pointer.
 
Trailing 26-19, the Saints got a big help from Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) and Gebeyehu, as they both hit shots from beyond-the-arc, to make it 26-25 with the Scots maintaining a lead.
 
The Saints reclaimed the lead in the closing minutes of the first half, headlined by free throws by Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville North High School (Dakota County Technical College)), and another three from Winesett, as CSS took a 30-29 lead into halftime.
 
Second Half
After Macalester reclaimed the lead in the opening minutes, Carlson got a layup to fall to tie the game at 32-32.
 
The Scots went on a 15-5 run over the next few minutes, as CSS could only get a layup from Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and a three from Winesett, as the Saints trailed 47-37.
 
The Saints were able to trim the lead down to six points, following layups by Hendrickson and Carlson, with 11 minutes to play.
 
Macalester expanded its lead in the next few minutes, but the Saints kept clawing away as Winesett and Carlson kept going back-and-forth, exchanging layups, as CSS trailed 60-52.
 
In the final minutes of the game, Macalester was able to blow the game open, and defeated CSS in today's matchup by a score of 69-55.

The Saints now sit at 3-9 and hold a 2-5 conference record. They will be back in action on Wednesday, where they will take on the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
