ST. JOSEPH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled to St. Joseph this evening to take on one of its conference rivals, the Bennies from Saint Benedict. The Saints trailed by just six at halftime, but a big second half for the Bennies led to the Saints falling in this one, by a score of 69-46.
First Half
The Saints struck first in this matchup, as
Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji High School) got the first points with a layup, to take an early 2-0 lead.
After the Bennies tied the game,
Lexi Imdieke (Andover, MN/Andover High School) got a three-pointer to fall, giving CSS a three-point cushion.
The Bennies then went on an 11-1 run to end the first quarter, as the Saints trailed 13-6, heading into the second quarter.
The Saints kickstarted the second quarter with back-to-back threes by Imdieke and Johnson, to trail by just one.
After the Bennies expanded its lead,
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) and Johnson both helped keep it close with layups of their own.
Katie Vaske (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury High School (Hamline University)) got her first points of the game, with four minutes to play in the second quarter, as she got a layup to fall. The layup cut the deficit for CSS to 22-18.
Imdieke then scored on consecutive possessions for the Saints, including another three-pointer, as the Saints trailed by three.
The Bennies took a six-point lead into halftime, leading 30-24.
Second Half
The Bennies expanded its lead early in the half, leading by 10, when Broberg and Vaske both got three-pointers to fall, as Saint Benedict led 37-30.
Broberg closed out the third quarter for CSS with a three, but the Bennies now led by 17 heading into the final quarter.
The Saints got its first field goal of the final quarter with five and a half minutes to play, when Imdieke got yet another three to fall.
Moments later, after a pair of free throws by Johnson, Imdieke got a layup to fall, but CSS still trailed big, 66-42.
The Bennies would ultimately close out the game, defeating CSS by a score of 69-46.

The Saints (0-16, 0-14 MIAC) will hit the court next on Saturday, where they will host Macalester in a conference matchup at Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
