Superior, Wis. (csssaints.com) – On Friday, St. Scholastica's volleyball team won their first game in the Stinger Classic tournament 3-1 against Nebraska Wesleyan University.
CSS 3, Nebraska Wesleyan 1
The Saints remained neck and neck with NWU throughout the majority of the first set. They even had the lead over Nebraska in two different instances but were not able to maintain those leads for very long. Despite their efforts they fell short 25-22.
The second set was a fresh start for St. Scholastica, as a kill by Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) put them on the board first. Shortly after the Saints went on to score seven in a row with five of those points being kills, three of which were made by Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS). This was not the only time CSS had a run like that as they finished the set by scoring 8 points in a row with six points being kills, four of which were made by Remer. The final of set two ended up being 25-12.
Set three began in favor of Nebraska as they were on the board first. However, CSS was able to make sure that was the only time NWU had the lead over them. After the teams were tied at 2-2 St. Scholastica continued to put up points on the board, further growing their lead. Finally, the third set ended with a kill by Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) to give the Saints a 25-18 win.
The fourth set began with the Saints scoring first with a service ace by Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS). This was just the beginning as CSS was able to maintain the lead throughout the entirety of the final set. Just as the set began with an ace it finished with one by Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) as well. The final score of the fourth set was 25-18.
Remer led the Saints in kills with 22 in today's win. Baribeau also contributed to today's win with 10 kills. Brostrom had 42 assists throughout the match, and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 32 digs for CSS.
