Superior, Wis.(csssaints.com) – On Saturday, the St. Scholastica volleyball team finished the Stinger Classic tournament with two wins. They won their first game 3-1 against Norland College, then wrapped up the day with a shutout 3-0 win against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

CSS 3, Northland 1

The Saints had a rough start as they fell into a hole early in the first set as Northland took a 7-1 lead. As Northland continued to put up points, time was running out for a comeback. St. Scholastica was only able to put up a total of 12 points in the first set leaving the final to be 25-12.

CSS came back firing right away in the second set with a kill from Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)). Despite falling behind 6-2 early on, the Saints had a five point run regaining their lead. St. Scholastica and Northland took turns in taking the lead, but with two different occasions of five kills in a row the Saints were able to take the second set 25-20.

The third set began in favor of Northland but with the Saints scoring seven points in a row, the Northland lead didn't last too long. CSS was able to maintain the lead through the end and closed out the set with one of Lindsey Baribeau's (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) seven kills she made throughout the second set. The third set finished with a final score of 25-19.

The Saints took on a 9-4 lead early on and it only continued from there. CSS only let up 12 points from Northland in the final set. St. Scholastica had three different instances of four or more points being scored in a row which played a pretty big role in the final outcome of 25-12 in favor of CSS.

Baribeau led the Saints with 18 kills, Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) followed with 15 and Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) contributed with nine. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) contributed with 45 assists throughout the match, and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 26 digs for CSS.

CSS 3, UW-Superior 0

Despite Superior being the first ones to score in the first set, the Saints steadily added on points until they had a five point run which included two kills by Schneeweis giving them a 9-4 lead. St. Scholastica's lead continued through the entirety of the set until they took the win 25-20.

CSS was the one that put up the first point in the second set. Superior had a small run but the Saints came back quickly. St. Scholastica and Superior had gone back and forth but the Saints trailed for the majority of the set. A kill by Remer tied up the score 24-24 then a kill by Baribeau gave the Saints the lead 28-27. Finally CSS took the win 29-27 after an attack error on Superior.

The third set began with the Saints trailing behind by a little but had tied it up and even took a slight lead with a five point run which included two kills from Baribeau. It was another close set as the score was only within a few points of each other, however St. Scholastica was able to keep the score in their favor and finished the set with a 25-22 win.

Remer and Baribeau both contributed with 11 kills and Schneeweis contributed with six. Brostrom led the Saints in assists with 35 and Draper led CSS in digs with 20.
