La Verne, Calif. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica's volleyball team finished their last two games of the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament 1-1. In the first match on Saturday morning, the Saints took a 3-1 victory over Chapman University, but fell to the University of La Verne 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

CSS 3, Chapman 1

Throughout the first set, the Saints and Chapman had tied up in three different occurrences. However, after the third time CSS took the lead and maintained it for the remainder of the first set leading to their 25-20 win.

St. Scholastica had a rough go around in the second set as the only time they had the lead over Chapman was when the score was 2-1. The Saints then fell into a hole where they were down by nine, but a kill by Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) was what finally got the ball rolling again for CSS and they were able to reduce Chapmans lead to four. Despite their best efforts, the second set still ended in an unfortunate 25-16 loss.

The Saints capitalized on errors from their opponent until Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) had the first kill of the third set. Remer got on a hot streak and gave the Saints four more kills giving them a 9-5 lead. This gave CSS the energy to repeat what happened in the second set but this time in their favor. Just like the second set, there was a nine point lead but this time around it was in the Saints' favor. St. Scholastica ended up winning this set 25-16.

Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) wasted no time getting the lead for the Saints with a kill right away. This was just the beginning as CSS wasted no time getting a 15-4 lead following that initial kill. Despite Chapman's best efforts they were not able to pull ahead over St. Scholastica leading to a 25-17 win in the fourth set.

For the third game in a row Remer led the Saints in kills with a total of 19 and Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) contributed with 12 kills. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 39 assists throughout the match, and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 24 digs for CSS.

CSS 2, La Verne 3

St. Scholastica brought the energy from the first match into the second match of the day against La Verne as they were able to put themselves up on the board first. They started to fall behind after that initial point but CSS was able to regroup and take back their lead at 11-10. For a while it was neck and neck between both teams as they remained within just one or two points of each other until CSS was able to close it out with a close 25-22 win.

Swangstue started the second set off with a kill for the Saints. CSS was looking to have a comfortable 14-7 lead, but La Verne did not roll over for this and began their comeback. The score was tied up 17-17 and for the remainder of the set both teams were going back and forth with who was in the lead. Finally, after a well fought set the Saints came out on top 28-26.

In the third and fourth set St. Scholastica simply could not find the momentum they had in the first two. Only seven out of their 24 points were from kills by the Saints. CSS ended up losing the next two sets 25-12 both times.

In the final set, the Saints dug deep after the two tough losses and gained a 4-1 lead early on. Five out of their first seven points were kills made by Remer and Larson. La Verne ended up coming from behind and tied them up at 7-7. Unfortunately, from then on the Saints weren't able to regain the lead and ended up taking a 15-11 loss.

The three leaders in kills against La Verne were Remer with 12, Schneeweis with eight and Swangstue with seven.
