Stevens Point, Wis.(csssaints.com) – On Friday, St. Scholastica volleyball had two matches to start off the Pointer Invitational. Their first matchup was a 3-2 loss against Carthage College and their second matchup was a 3-1 loss against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
CSS 2, Carthage 3
The Saints fell into a hole early on in the first set as Carthage took a 9-3 lead. Although CSS attempted to come back it was without success as they were never able to gain a lead over Carthage. St. Scholastica ended up on the losing side of the first set 25-18.
The second set had the start the Saints were looking for as they took a 4-0 lead right away. Three of those points were from kills by three different players. Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) started off the set, Lindsey Baribou followed and then finally Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS). CSS was able to remain in the lead for the entirety of the the second set and this time finished on the winning side of the 25-18 final.
St. Scholastica brought that momentum into the third set and really capitalized on errors made by Carthage. Despite Carthage taking the initial lead, CSS was able to come back quickly. The set finished with a kill by Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) to give St. Scholastica the 25- 21 win.
Despite the two wins in the second and third sets, the Saints weren't able to bring that into the fourth set to take the match win. For the majority of the fourth set Carthage and CSS remained close in score. However, the Saints couldn't come out on top in the fourth set and took a 25-20 loss forcing the match to go into its fifth set. The final set was similar to fourth as it was a close score for the majority of the set. Despite that, the Saints couldn't bring home the win and were faced with a 15-12 loss and ending on the losing side of the match.
Remer led the Saints with 14 kills and Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) and Baribou followed with nine. Grace Myher contributed with 21 assists throughout the match, and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 30 digs for CSS.
CSS 1, UW-River Falls 3
The Saints started off strong against River Falls with a kill by Bailee Hess (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS) to get the ball rolling on their 4-0 lead. However, this momentum was unable to be maintained for the duration of the set. UW-River Falls took the lead at 9-8 and continued to rapidly put up more points against the Saints. The first set ended in a 25-12 loss for St. Scholastica.
Despite that loss in the initial set, CSS came back in the second. The set began with a kill from Baribou which followed by a kill from Remer. St. Scholastica lost their lead momentarily but were able to regain it and took a 25-17 win over UWRF.
Similar to the first match of the day, the Saints weren't able to carry positive momentum all the way through. The Saints were able to take a 15-11 lead over River Falls in the third however, River Falls started to make a comeback and tied up the score at 19-19. The Saints were only able to get one more kill before UWRF took the 25-20 win.
River Falls took a 9-2 lead over the Saints rather quickly in the fourth set. However, St. Scholastica was able to comeback and take a 15-12 lead. The Saints couldn't take it all the way and fell to UWRF 25-19 to end the match.
