Saints Volleyball Win Their First Conference Match

Duluth, Minn.(csssaints.com) – On Saturday, St. Scholastica volleyball had two matches throughout the day. The first match was against Carleton College and the Saints won 3-2. The second match of the day was against the University of Wisconsin-Superior and won 3-0.

CSS 3, Carleton 2

The Saints had a solid start to the first set as they opened with Andrews' first collegiate kill.

However, following the initial kill it was a back and forth battle between both teams on who could maintain the lead. At 20-20 it was anyone's win to take, but unfortunately the Saints couldn't take the first win of the match as they only were able to score one more point leaving the final score to be 25-21.

In repeat of the first set CSS scored first taking the initial lead over Carleton. Carleton then went on to have a six point run taking a 9-6 lead over the Saints. Following that it was back and forth between the two teams on taking the lead. St. Scholastica did have the lead at 18-16 but weren't able to maintain it as they ended up just falling short in a 25-23 loss.

The Saints went into the third set down 2-0 making it a long battle back in order to take the win over Carleton. Carleton started this match off scoring first but CSS came back quickly and held their own throughout the set. When the score was 20-19 with St. Scholastica in the lead, the Saints had a five point run to take their first win of the match.

The fourth match started off with CSS scoring first with a kill my Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS). Throughout the set, a five point run from the Saints gave them a 21-15 lead. This five point run included a kill by Katie Brostom and a kill by Alana Mayry (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS). St. Scholastica was able to close out the set with a kill by Remer giving them a 25-18 win.

The final set began again with the Saints getting up on the board first. At no point throughout the final set did the Saints fall behind. St. Scholastica was able to pull a win in the final set 15-10 giving them the match against Carleton.

Remer led the Saints with 19 kills, Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) contributed with 10 and Mayry contributed with seven. Brostrom contributed with 44 assists throughout the match, and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 22 digs for CSS.

CSS 3, UW-Superior 0

To start off the first set the Saints had two back to back kills by Brostrom and Remer. There was only one moment where CSS did not hold the lead over UWS and it was late in the set with the score at 20-19. Despite that, St. Scholastica was able to hold UWS to only one more point for the remainder of the set and took a 25-21 win.

The second set began with a point in favor of UWS but Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) came back with the first kill of the set for the Saints giving them their first point. Throughout this set the Saints lost their lead early on but was able to come back to take the win 25-20 with another kill by Swangstue to finish it off. In the third set UWS was able to take an early 8-2 lead over the Saints. However, St. Scholastica was able to come back and take the win 25-22 leading to yet another shoutout win against UWS.

Remer led the Saints in kills with 19 kills for the second time of the day. Mayry contributed with eight and Larson contributed with five. Brostrom led the Saints in assists with 37 and Draper led CSS in digs with 21.

The Saints (8-1, 1-0 MIAC) will be on the road on Wednesday to face St. Olaf College. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
