ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica football team traveled to St. Bonifacius this Saturday to take on Crown College in a rivalry that hasn't seen the Saints lose in since 2008. Today, was no different, as the Saints were able to record 458 yards of total offense and force three turnovers. Today's victory gives CSS its first win in 10 games and its first win since November 9
th, 2019.
How it Happened
The Saints' defense opened the game forcing a three-and-out and on the Saints' first drive of the game, the Saints offense was able to produce three first downs, caping the drive off with a 23-yard touchdown rush by Freshman running back
Ashton Hain (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis HS) to give the Saints an early 7-0 lead.
The Saints added to its lead late in the first quarter when
Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) took an interception to the house for another Saints touchdown to make it 14-0 in favor of the Saints.
On the Polars' next drive, CSS stepped up once again on the defensive side of the ball, this time it was safety
Antonio Bugni (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) with an interception to stop a Crown drive once again.
The Saints took advantage of Bugni's interception on its drive, with
Donald West (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury HS (Iowa Central)) connecting with Ricky Webber for a 40-yard touchdown to make it 21-0.
Crown scored on its next drive to make it 21-6 still trailing the Saints.
CSS' next drive was one highlighted by Hain's second touchdown rush of the day, giving CSS a 28-6 lead that they would take into halftime.
St. Scholastica received the opening kickoff in the second half and picked up right where they left off in the first half.
Nick Schlender (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) was the star of the drive. The sophomore recorded a 21-yard reception from West, then proceeded to rush for 11 more yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run to extend CSS' lead, by a score of 35-6.
West connected with
Andrew Burgess II (Tampa, Fla./Cypress Creek HS) on the Saints' next drive for another touchdown to make it 42-6.
CSS had great field position on its next drive and took advantage once again. Once again, it was West finding Webber for another touchdown making it a 49-6 game.
CSS ended its last drive in the third quarter with Hain recording his third touchdown rush of the afternoon in just his second career game making it 56-6.
CSS scored once again on its first drive of the fourth quarter, this time freshman
Logan Orvedahl (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS) found the endzone capping off a drive where he ran for 41 yards, making it a 63-6 lead over the Polars.
Crown would score one more time, but CSS took today's game in commanding fashion, by a score of 63-14, winning the programs first game since November 9
th, 2019.
Top Performers
Donald West (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury HS (Iowa Central)) threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns for the Saints today, both of which were career highs for the sophomore.
Ashton Hain (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis HS) recorded 97 rushing yards on just 10 carries and
Nick Schlender (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) recorded 68 yards today. Hain found the endzone three times, while Schlender found it twice.
Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS) led the Saints in receiving with 95 yards on six catches, while
Ricky Weber (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) recorded two touchdown receptions.
Defensively, for the Saints,
Simon Randorf (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led the team in tackles with seven, while
Antonio Bugni (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS),
Colby Jorschumb (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS), and
Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) all had interceptions today.
