csssaints.com) – The NCAA officially announced the participants for next weekend's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and for the first time since 2016 St. Scholastica will send multiple competitors.
Beneke First Women's Thrower Since 2014 to Qualify
Sophomore
Lily Beneke (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East HS) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the Hammer Throw. Beneke, who has recorded personal-best throws in each of her last four meets, had the 13
th-best mark in NCAA Division III this season at 173'9" (52.95m) at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships. Beneke won the MIAC title, becoming the first women to capture a MIAC event crown.
Beneke will be the third St. Scholastica woman to compete in the Hammer Throw at joining Alec Seeley (2012) and Becky Huberty (2012, 2013, 2014). Huberty was a two-time All-American in the Hammer Throw in 2013 and 2014.
Boone Gets in by Last Chance Qualifier
Sophomore
Calvin Boone's (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS) performance at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Qualifier on Wednesday night was enough to get him into the field in the 1,500m run. Boone broke his own program record by over five seconds on Wednesday, coming from behind to win in the final 50 meters with a time of 3:47.65. That time is tied for the 19
th-fastest in NCAA Division III.
Boone will become the first Saint to compete in the 1,500m run at a NCAA Championship. He also qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall, becoming the first men's runner to accomplish that feat in school history.
Action Begins Thursday
The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio beginning on Thursday. The prelims of the men's 1,500m will take place at 5:50 p.m. (ET). The women's Hammer Throw will take place next Saturday at 11 a.m. (ET). The finals of the men's 1,500m would also be on Saturday at 12:35 p.m. (ET).
