Women’s Tennis Slips Past Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team played in its second consecutive dual match that was decided by a 5-4 score, however, this time the Saints came out on top defeating Saint Mary's University on Saturday in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.
 
Doubles
The Saints would win two of the three doubles matches over the Cardinals (11-8, 4-6 MIAC), which proved to be crucial.
 
The No. 1 team of Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won via a tiebreaker by scores of 8-7 (8-6).
 
The No. 3 team of Ava Warren (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Hannah Loewen (St. James, Minn./St. James HS) also edged their opponents by an 8-6 score.
 
Singles
The two doubles wins helped the Saints use their strength at the top of the singles lineup to carry them to the dual win.
 
Maier won at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
 
Jankila also won in straight sets at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-2, 7-5.
 
Martina Garcia (Cuenca, Ecuador/Catalinas HS (Eastern Florida State College)) was the final winner on the day at the No. 3 spot by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.
 
Up Next
The Saints (8-6, 4-4 MIAC) will have their home finale on Friday when they welcome St. Catherine University to Duluth. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
