Women’s Tennis Goes 2-0 on Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated both the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) and Roger Williams University (R.I.) on Tuesday down in Florida.
 
CSS 7, Saint Francis 2
The Saints swept singles play to defeat NAIA's Saint Francis in the morning 7-2. The Cougars (1-15) won both doubles matches, but defaulted to the Saints at the No. 3 spot.
 
St. Scholastica then dominated the four singles matches that were played and won by default at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots.
 
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Then first-year players Martina Garcia (Cuenca, Ecuador/Catalinas HS (Eastern Florida State College)) at No. 2 and Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) at No. 3 both blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
 
Maria Valentini (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) was the final winner at the No. 4 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
 
CSS 6, Roger Williams 2
The Saints finished the day with a 6-2 triumph over Roger Williams (14-3).
 
St. Scholastica won two of the three doubles matches as the No. 1 team of Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Jankila won in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-5).
 
The No. 2 team of Anna Ritchie (Becker, Minn./Becker HS) and Garcia cruised to an 8-2 win.
 
In singles action, Jankila won her second match of the day at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Garcia also won her second match by scores of 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. Benitez earned her second win of the day by scores of 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
 
The final winner was Ritchie at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-0, 6-3.

The Saints (5-2) will be at the Lake Cane Tennis Center on Wednesday when they face Connecticut College at 1 p.m. (ET).
