PREVIEW: CSS Men’s Hockey to Play in Superior Showdown

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team head across the bridge, to Superior, Wisconsin for a pair of non-conference games before the new year on December 29 and 30.

Tournament History
This will be the Saints third appearance in the Superior Showdown, they first appeared in 2018, when CSS lost 4-3 in the first round to Marian University (Wis.), but were able to claim the consolation game over the University of Wisconsin-Superior winning 3-2.

Last year (2021), the Saints once again saw trouble in the first round as they fell to Aurora University (Ill.) in a shootout. Both teams tied 2-2, but ultimately AU won the shootout 2-0. The Saints would see a familiar foe in the 2021 consolation match, the Yellow Jackets of Superior, UWS got revenge as they beat CSS 5-1.

Fast forward to 2022, where the Saints face-off on Thursday, December 29 against the Marian Sabres. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. If the Saints win, they will play in the championship game Friday night against either Gustavus Adolphus or UWS at 7 p.m. If things don't go as planned, they will play the loser at 3 p.m. for the consolation title.

Head coach Dave Williams and his team are excited to get back on the ice since their last game in early December. The Saints carry some momentum as they beat Northland 7-3 at home on December 9. 

Junior Forward Arkhip Ledenkov (Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)), leads the Saints with 15 points (6G, 9A) and after his 2 goals against Northland, he shares the most goals scored this season with two other Saints.

First, that being the Roseau, Minn., native Nathan Adrian (Roseau HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)), who currently has 14 points (6G, 8A). Adrian managed a goal and two assists in their win over Northland.

Lastly, Filimon Ledenkov, (Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)), is just a couple of points behind his twin brother Arkhip, who probably reminds him at the dinner table. Filmon has a total of 13 points respectfully, (6G, 7A), and added 2 assists to his totals on the season.

Junior Jack Bostedt (Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)), has a total of 250 saves on the season so far, with a 2.11 GAA, and his save percentage is .936 behind the net. Although, it was Sophomore Oliver Quinn (Merrimack Valley HS (Team Maryland-EHL)), from New Hampshire who made his first start on the season and had 33 saves on the night, allowing 3 goals, for a .917 save percentage against Northland.

Marian's last game was also in early December where they fell to Trine University in an NCHA matchup. The Sabres are led by first year head coach Clay Van Diest, who is looking to get his team back in the win column as the Sabres have lost six straight.

This offense is led by Jack Sampson, he leads with 11 points (3G, 8A). Jaymes Knee (3G, 7A) and leading goal scorer Nick Cherkowski (4G, 3A), have been key additions to the Sabres. Senior Colby Muise has played the majority of the minutes for the Sabres, he's totaled a 3-6-0 record with a 3.25 GAA to go along with a .900 save percentage.
