ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was held to 29% shooting in the second half, while Hamline University shot 55% as the Saints could not hold its five-point halftime lead, falling 62-56 on Wednesday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.
How It Happened
The Pipers (5-7, 3-4 MIAC) scored the first basket of the game, but then the Saints scored the next 13 points to open up an early 11-point advantage. CSS got 3-pointers from
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) to cap that run. St. Scholastica led by as much as 12 following a
Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) free throw with 11 minutes left in the half.
Hamline responded with a 9-0 run in the span of three minutes to cut the CSS lead to three. However, the Saints maintained the lead and a
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) layup put the margin at double digits again with over five minutes remaining in the half. However, St. Scholastica did not make a field goal in the final three minutes of the half and Hamline was able to cut the deficit to 31-26 at the break.
Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) made it 33-28 a minute into the second half. The Pipers then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) gave the Saints the lead back at 45-41 with eight minutes remaining.
A Winesett 3-pointer made it 50-46 CSS with over five minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Hamline went on a 7-0 run following that basket to regain the lead and the Saints would make just three more field goals in the final five minutes as it fell 62-56.
