DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – On Wednesday evening, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team earned its first win of the season and first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory in program history against St. Catherine University by a final of 61-55 at the Reif Gymnasium.

How It Happened
St. Scholastica was the first one to get on the board with a successful free throw by Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS). Following that, St. Kates (5-9, 4-7 MIAC) came back with a layup giving them the lead. However, this was only one of two times St. Kates had the lead over CSS in the first quarter, both times by just one point. The score throughout this first quarter remained close but by the end of it the Saints came out with the lead 17-13. Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) contributed to this lead with six points.

Both teams were neck and neck all the way up to halftime. The Saints only lost the lead once, by two points late in the second quarter. However, Elizabeth Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) was able to make a layup to tie up the score. By the end of the first half St. Scholastica and St. Kate's both had 28 points.

The competition remained high coming back from halftime. The Saints gained a six-point lead about halfway through the third quarter. This time though, they weren't able to maintain the lead or even keep the score tied as St. Kate took a three-point lead to finish out this quarter.

The Wildcats extended their lead to six early in the fourth quarter, but the Saints responded with an 11-1 run to regain the lead at 55-51. Neither team would make a field goal the final two minutes as St. Kate's drained four free throws to tie the contest at 55-55 with a minutes remaining.

However, Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) drained four straight free throws to make it 59-55 and then Frase made two more in the final 20 seconds to give the Saints the 61-55 victory.
