WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) dropped a career-high 31 points, but the St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell just short of making it two wins in a row with a 72-68 loss to Saint Mary's University on Saturday in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.

How It Happened
The Cardinals (5-13, 4-11 MIAC) jumped out to an 18-2 lead as the Saints made only one field goal and committed six turnovers in the first six minutes of the game. However, CSS responded quickly with a 9-0 run and trailed 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

It was within the second quarter when the Saints were able to not only close the gap on Saint Mary's, but took the lead. Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) had a big run during this quarter and contributed 12 out of the 18 points scored in an 18-2 run by St. Scholastica. The Cardinals scored the final six points of the half as the Saints trailed 35-33 at the break.

St. Scholastica came back from halftime and were the ones to score first with a three pointer by Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) giving the Saints the lead. Again, throughout the third quarter CSS was able to maintain a lead against the Cardinals but couldn't hold it all the way through. The Saints had a 6-0 run late in the period, capped by a Grace Balut (Sandstone, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) layup, to give CSS a 47-45 lead. Saint Mary's scored an and-one in the final minute to take a 48-47 lead into the final period.

The Cardinals maintained a small lead on the Saints for much of the fourth quarter until a three-point-play by Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) tied the game at 60-60 with three minutes remaining. Saint Mary's answered with five straight points. Missed free throws late by the Cardinals gave the Saints the ball down three in the final 10 seconds. Unfortunately, CSS would lose possession and give it right back to the Cardinals who sealed the game with a free throw to make the final 72-68.
