DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team could not overcome a 12-point halftime deficit in an 83-74 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.
How It Happened
Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) recorded four points as St. Scholastica led 7-4 in the early going. A
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) 3-pointer then made it 10-6 just two minutes in. With CSS still ahead at the 15-minute mark, the Gusties (7-6, 4-4 MIAC) went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 26-14 lead. Gustavus was 6-for-6 from the floor during that stretch. The Saints did not get closer than eight the rest of the first half as the Gusties led 44-32 at the half. Gustavus shot 55% from the floor in the half, while CSS was held to 37%.
Gustavus extended its lead to 16 early in the second half and led by 13 with 10 minutes to go. At that point, St. Scholastica begin to chip away. The Saints went on a 9-1 run over the next two minutes to make the score 64-59.
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had five of the nine points for the Saints during that run.
Later in the half,
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) scored six straight points for the Saints cut the deficit to 70-68 with four minutes remaining. However, Gustavus responded with a big 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, which started a 10-0 run to put the game away as the Gusties went on to win 83-74.
Top Performers
Carlson led the Saints with a season-high 26 points. He also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Fischer finished with 16 points with a team-high four assists. Winesett added 14 points.
Peter Lundquist had 22 points to pace the Gusties.
