Baseball Wraps Up UMAC Action with Sweep of Morris

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team played its final Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) games of the regular season on Saturday and swept the University of Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader at Wade Stadium.  
 
Game 1: CSS 13, Cougars 2 (F/7)
The Saints jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings to go on to win 13-2 after seven innings.
 
They scored two unearned runs early in the first on throwing errors. In the second inning Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) tripled for three RBIs.
 
The Cougars scored two runs in the third and fourth inning to make the score 7-2.
 
In the sixth inning, Bryce Huffman (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) hit a single for two RBIs. Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) hit a single to bring in Novak. Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit a sacrifice fly to advance Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) home.
 
The game ended in the seventh inning with a final score of 13-2. Dallas Miller (Monticello, Minn./Big Lake HS) got awarded the win allowing four hits. Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes CC)) went 4-for-4 batting and Novak went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs. 
 
Game 2: CSS 16, Cougars 0 (F/7)
The second game of the day saw the Saints score in every inning it batted in a 16-0 seven-inning win.
 
The Saints scored the first run of the game on a single by Olson to bring in Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS). They scored three more runs in the second and third innings with Novak and Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) collecting RBIs.
 
Olson hit a double in the fourth inning to advance Tautges home again. Olson later scored on a single by Schelonka. The score after the fourth inning was 6-0.
 
The Saints broke the game open in the fifth inning with seven runs. Haapajoki hit the first single of the inning. Reed Larson (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) later hit a single for two RBIs. Olson also hit a single to the left side to advance Novak to score. Then back around the batting order with Haapajoki up again, he hit a double down the right field line for another RBI.
 
In the sixth inning the Saints scored three more runs with Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) recording an RBI single and Riley Ahrndt (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) driving in two to make the final score of the game 16-0.
 
Grant Taival (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got awarded the win allowing only three hits and striking out three in three innings. Olson went 3-for-4 and collected three RBIs. K. Larson also went 4-for-5 batting in the game.
 
Up Next: The Saints (17-5, 13-3 UMAC) host the University of St. Thomas for a nonconference doubleheader at Wade Stadium on Tuesday. Action begins at 1:30 p.m.
