Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball’s Win Streak Ended by St. Thomas

Notables:
-Final DIII regular season meeting between two programs (UST moves to DI next year)
-Two, seven-inning games
-UST recorded just two hits in game two

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team had its eight-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday with a pair of non-conference losses to the University of St. Thomas at Wade Stadium.

Game 1: St. Thomas 5, CSS 2
The Tommies (25-5) scored a run in each of the final three innings to pull away and take game one by a 5-2 margin.

The Saints struck first in the bottom of the first when Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) drove in Bryce Huffman (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) with a two-out double to make it 2-0. St. Thomas answered in the top of second, scoring on a CSS error and then tacking on another to tie the game at 2-2.

Schelonka almost gave the Saints the lead back in the fourth with a deep shot to left field, but the outfielder made the play against the wall to keep the game tied. The Tommies took the first lead of the game in the top of the fifth on a RBI groundout.

St. Thomas made it 4-2 with a RBI single in the sixth and then added a two-out triple in the seventh to make it 5-2. CSS could not get the bats going in the late innings as the Tommies took game one 5-2.

Grant Taival (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) went the distance for the Saints in the defeat. Huffman was the only Saints to register multiple hits.

Game 2: St. Thomas 1, CSS 0
T.J. Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) limited St. Thomas to just two hits in game two, but the one run the Tommies were able to push across was the difference in the 1-0 defeat.

A leadoff walk led to a one-out single for the Tommies in the second to make it 1-0. St. Thomas had a two-out double later in the game for its only other hit.

CSS' best offensive threat came in the bottom of the fifth. The Saints put runners at second and third with one out, but could not push a run across in the inning.

St. Scholastica then put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh, but the Tommies would get a groundball double-play to end it by a final margin of 1-0.

Up Next: The Saints (17-7) wrap up the regular season tomorrow with their home finale against Hamline University. The single, nine-inning game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Wade Stadium.
