Baseball Cruises to Sweep of Martin Luther

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team rolled to a pair of seven-inning wins on Saturday over Martin Luther College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action at Wade Stadium.
 
Game 1: CSS 19, MLC 5 (F/7)
The Saints jumped out to a 13-0 lead to begin the day, including seven runs in the third inning to win 19-5.
 
In the first inning, Bryce Huffman (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) scored on a single by Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS). Schelonka later scored when Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) walked. Next inning, Schelonka hit a double and Huffman and Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) scored.
 
The third inning saw the Saints score six runs, four of which coming on bases loaded walks and wild pitches. Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) hit a single and had two RBIs as Olson and Huffman scored.
 
The Knights got on the board in the sixth inning, but the Saints won in seven by a score of 19-5
 
Dallas Miller (Monticello, Minn./Big Lake HS) got awarded the win with six strikeouts. Schelonka had four RBIs, while Reed Larson (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) and Alex Busick (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School) had three RBIs each.
 
Game 2: CSS 11, MLC 0 (F/7)
The second game of the day saw the Saints shutout the Knights 11-0.
 
In the first inning, Huffman singled to advance Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) home. Schelonka hit an inside-the-park homer for three more runs.
 
In the fourth inning, Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) hit a triple to bring in Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes CC)). Novak singled to advance Tautges home making the score 7-0.

Next inning, Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) hit a two-run home run. Next up to bat, Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) hit a home run to left field. Later, Novak singled and Alec Curtis (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) scored the last run of the game.
 
Grant Taival (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got awarded the win. Novak went 2-for-3 and had three RBIs. Schelonka went 4-for-6 and had six RBIs on the day.

The Saints (13-5, 9-3 UMAC) will travel to face North Central University (Minn.) on Tuesday. The action begins at 1:30 p.m.
