csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday at Wade Stadium in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader.
Game 1: CSS 13, UWS 9
The first game saw the Saints hold off the Yellowjackets (11-17, 4-6 UMAC) to win 13-9
In the first inning,
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) hit a single up the middle and
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored along with
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS). In the third inning, Schelonka doubled to earn another two RBIs and another run came in on the play due to UWS error. Going into the fourth inning the Saints were up 5-2.
In the fourth inning,
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) singled to left center and Tautges and
Alec Curtis (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) advanced home, while Novak advanced to third. Next up, Schelonka hit a sacrifice fly to advance Novak home. Making the score now 8-2. The Yellowjackets had five unanswered runs in the fifth inning making it a tight game once again at 8-7.
The Saints took back another commanding lead in the sixth inning when Schelonka hit another double to advance
Bryce Huffman (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) home. Later,
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) hit a double to advance both Schelonka and Olson home. The seventh inning saw UWS get one run back, but the Saints answered with Huffman's double when Curtis scored.
Both UWS and The Saints scored one run in the eighth inning. Then with the save
Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) held Superior in the ninth making the final score 13-9.
The Yellowjackets stranded the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) got awarded the win pitching three innings of relief. Olson was 4-for-5 and had two RBIs, and Schelonka went 3-for-4 with six RBIs.
Game 2: CSS 11, UWS 0 (F/8)
The second game was one sided as the Saints shutout the Yellowjackets 11-0 thanks to seven runs in the first and then four runs in the eighth.
St. Scholastica started off the game strong. In the first inning, Olson doubled down the left field line to advance Novak home. Right after, Schelonka hit a double back down the left field line with both Olson and Huffman scoring.
Still in the first inning, with the bases loaded
Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes CC)) walked advancing everyone on base and Schelonka scored. Tautges hit a single and
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) and Schemenauer scored awarding Tautges two RBIs. Next Novak singled to shortstop and Haapajoki scored ending the first inning at 7-0.
The next seven innings saw no scoring. In the eighth inning, the Saints extended their lead. Huffman hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Haapajoki scored. Olson then hit a three-run home run to end the game by mercy rule by a final of 11-0.
Jack Perala (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) earned the win pitching seven innings and only allowing two hits and recording nine strikeouts. The seven innings pitched and nine strikeouts were both career highs. Olson finished the day 7-for-10 and six RBIs. Tautges went 3-for-3 in game two and had two RBIs.
