ST. PETER, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In its first game in 17 days, the St. Scholastica baseball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus College 13-5 on Thursday.
How it Happened
After the Saints stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Gusties (3-0) pushed four runs across in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
St. Scholastica responded in the fourth inning with the first six hitters reaching base. With the bases loaded,
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) had a RBI single to bring in
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS). That was followed by a
Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) two-run double scoring
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) and
Alex Busick (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School). Schemenauer then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) gave the Saints the lead with a RBI single to make it 5-4.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Gustavus hit a grand slam home run in the bottom frame to regain the lead at 8-5. The Gusties added a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend the deficit to 12-5. The Saints could not get any offense generated the rest of the way falling 13-5
Pitching
Both teams used five pitchers in the contest with
Jack Perala (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) picking up the loss for the Saints and Jayce Luna being credited with the win for the Gusties.
