DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team earned its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win of the season Sunday night after
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) netted the game winner 14 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime to give the Saints the 5-4 victory over Lawrence University (Wis.) at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints were two skaters down three different times in the first 35 minutes of action, but only surrendered one goal on the first of those situations, which put the Vikings (1-1-0, 1-1-0 NCHA) on the board seven minutes into the contest. After Lawrence went up 2-0 with six minutes to go in the first, the Saints capitalized on their first power-play of the game as
Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) was left alone on the weak side and buried the puck into the net for his first collegiate goal to make it 2-1. His twin brother,
Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)), and
Daniel Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum (New York Aviators-USPHL)) had the assists.
With 2:30 still in the first period, CSS tied it up at 2-2 when
Riley Bechard (Sedley, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Woodstock-MJAHL)) jammed the puck home for another power-play goal. The Ledenkov's were credited with the assists.
The Vikings regained the lead with over three minutes left in the second period, but that lead did not last long as
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) scored 25 seconds later to make it 3-3 at the second intermission.
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) had the assist.
St. Scholastica took its first lead of the night two minutes into the third period when
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) found A. Ledenkov for his second of the night to make it 4-3. It stayed 4-3 until a giveaway by the Saints led to a Lawrence goal with 5:28 remaining to tie the contest at 4-4.
With less than seven seconds remaining in the contest, CSS pulled their goaltender with the face-off deep in Lawrence's defensive end, but the move almost backfired as the Vikings quickly gained control of the puck and took a shot from the blueline, but the buzzer sounded just before the puck crossed the goal line and the contest went to overtime.
The 3-on-3 overtime did not last long as the Vikings won the draw, but lost possession of the puck at their blueline, and
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) was able to slap one past goaltender just 14 seconds in to give the Saints the 5-4 victory.
Goaltending
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) made 29 saves for his second win of the season. Alex Mosquera had 19 saves for the Vikings.
