csssaints.com) - On Saturday afternoon at the Reif Gymnasium, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team made its long awaited Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) debut, hosting Saint John's University. The Saints held their own in the first half, only finding themselves down by six going into halftime. However, CSS struggled to score in the second half, shooting just 20 percent, ending in a 74-51 loss.
How it Happened
The Johnnies (3-2, 1-0 MIAC) found themselves with an early lead, up 22-12 with 10 minutes left in the first half. CSS rallied back, eventually tying the game up with two minutes left in the half at 27-27. The big run was highlighted with a trio of shots by
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS), including a pair of free throws. Saint John's took a 37-31 lead into the locker room at the half.
The second half saw the Johnnies extended their six point lead early, opening the half with an 12-0 run. CSS struggled to put the ball in the basket in the second half, shooting only 20 percent in the second half and 57 percent from the free throw line. Saint John's took advantage of the Saints' struggles and outscored CSS 37-20, and pulled away to spoil the Saints' MIAC debut 74-51.
Top Performers
Carlson led the way for the Saints in scoring this afternoon, finishing the contest with 15 points, all coming in the first half.
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was the only other Saint in double figures with 10 points.
Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) added seven points and also had a team-high three steals.
Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) led the way for the Saints on the boards today, recording six rebounds while also adding six points.
