Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Convincing Road Win at Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – After two postponements, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team returned to the court for the first time in 333 days and defeated Northland College 84-51 to open its 2020-21 season Wednesday evening.
 
How It Happened
The Saints began the game with a 10-2 lead with junior Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) scoring seven of CSS' 10 points. Midway through the first half, CSS went on a 17-2 scoring spurt to extend its lead to 34-12. During that span, first-year guard Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had five points. The Saints then scored the final seven points of the half with Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) registering the final four points to make the halftime margin 48-21.
 
St. Scholastica shot 53% from the floor in the first half and outscored the LumberJacks 17-2 in points off turnovers.
 
CSS went on a 9-0 run early in the second half and grew its lead to as much as 41 before setting for the 84-51 victory. Sophomore transfer Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) led CSS with eight points in the second half.
 
Top Performers
Fischer led all scorers with 17 points. Wilken added 13 points off the bench. Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) put up 11 points and also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded seven steals. Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) chipped in 10 points.
 
Jordan Brennan scored 10 points to lead Northland.

The Saints begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Saturday when take face the University of Minnesota Morris in their home opener at the Reif Gymnasium. Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
