DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team held the University of Minnesota Morris to 33% shooting to defeat the Cougars 81-61 Saturday in the home and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
How It Happened
Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) scored the first bucket of the game, but the Saints were held to only two made field goals in the first seven-and-a-half minutes of action and trailed 10-4. CSS trailed 15-8 at the midway point of the first half when Head Coach David Staniger called a timeout.
 
Following the timeout, the Saints went on an 8-0 run, which was sparked by a Connor Bich (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS (Dakota Wesleyan)) 3-pointer. St. Scholastica closed the first half with another 8-0 run with Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scoring the final six points of the half as the Saints led 40-28 at the break. Silgen nearly had a double-double in the first half grabbing nine rebounds to go along with 10 points.
 
A seven-point spurt six minutes into the second half extended the CSS lead to 58-38. The margin climbed to as high as 27 points before the Saints ultimately prevailed 81-61.
 
Top Performers
Hendrickson led all scorers with 18 points, including 12 in the first half. Silgen finished with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Bich and Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) each added nine points.
 
Corbyn Alexander led the Cougars with 17 points.

The Saints (2-0) hit the road next Saturday will they will face UMAC preseason favorite the University of Northwestern (Minn.) for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
