ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opened play on its Spring Break trip with a victory over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa), but fell in the nightcap to Hampden-Sydney College (Va.) at the USTA National Campus on Sunday.
CSS 7, Saint Ambrose 2
The Saints swept all three doubles matches over the Fighting Bees (0-8). The No. 1 team of
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-5. The No. 2 duo of
Duke Nguyen (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy and Summit School) and
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), along with the No. 3 tandem of
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) and
Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) each won by 8-2 to margins.
In singles action, Schneider at the No. 1 spot and Kearney at the No. 2 spot, shut out their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Anderson won 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. The final winner was
Giacomo Lucchesi (Lima, Peru/Santa Maria Marianistas) at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Hampden-Sydney 7, CSS 2
The Saints played on the clay during the evening against Hampden-Sydney, but would fall by a 7-2 score.
The Tigers (1-4) swept all three doubles matches, while the only Saints to win in singles play were Lucchesi at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-4 and
Bradley Golant (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS (Hearst-NOJHL)) at the No. 6 spot by scores of 6-4, 6-0.
