ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opened action on Tuesday with a win over Illinois Wesleyan University, but fell under the lights to McMurry University (Texas).
CSS 7, Illinois Wesleyan 2
The Saints got off to a slow start, dropping two of the three doubles matches. The lone CSS doubles team to win was the No. 3 team of
Duke Nguyen (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy and Summit School) and
Giacomo Lucchesi (Lima, Peru/Santa Maria Marianistas) prevailing 8-2.
The Saints did control singles play, however, winning all six flights.
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) took the No. 1 spot by scores of 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) won in straight sets at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-0.
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) also had little issues at the No. 3 position, winning 6-3, 6-0.
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at the No. 4 spot and
Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at the No. 5 spot had to rally and win in three sets. Jolowsky took overtime in the 10-point third set super-breaker, winning 4-6, 6-3, (14-12). Anderson dropped his first set 2-6, but won the second set 6-1 and the super-breaker 10-7.
Bradley Golant (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS (Hearst-NOJHL)) did not drop a game to win 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.
McMurry 6, CSS 1
The Saints dropped the nightcap against McMurry in a match where the dual did not finish dual to the facility closing.
The lone winner for the Saints was Golant at No. 6 singles by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Golant has won his first three matches of the spring season.
