ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team had its final Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) road trip on Saturday at Crown College. The Saints faced a deficit for the majority of the game, but clutch shooting and strong defensive possessions down the stretch brought the Saints a solid win over the Storm 82-77.
How It Happened
The Saints got on the board first with a layup from
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) and the following possession
Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) would hit a three to gain a 5-3 lead one minute into the game. CSS gained a four-point lead over Crown at 12-8, but a 6-0 run for the Storm (7-14, 5-7 UMAC) gave Crown a 14-12 lead seven minutes into the first half.
The Saints led 29-25 with seven minutes left in the half before Crown went on a strong 15-6 run to go up 40-32 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Storm extended their lead to as large as 10 points before a much-needed 8-0 run by the Saints closed out the final two minutes of the half with Crown holding a small 44-42 lead.
Crown came out of the break extending its lead to 55-47. The Saints scored seven straight points to get within one, 55-54, but the Storm went on another run of their own to reclaim a 64-55 lead with 11 minutes left in the game. The Saints would slowly chip away at the lead by way of nine points by
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) to gain a two-point lead, 73-71 with five minutes remaining.
The Storm regained the lead at 75-74 with less than two minutes remaining. From that point on, the Storm missed six straight shots, while the Saints went 8-for-8 from the free throw line as CSS outlasted the Storm 82-77.
Top Performers
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) led the Saints in scoring with a career-high 28 points.
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had a season-high 15 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Silgen brought down his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Silgen and Anderson recorded five assists apiece in the win.
