DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team welcomed bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior to The Reif for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup on Wednesday evening. A very defensive first half led to an equal beginning to the second half. UW-Superior would find a run after three straight CSS turnovers and the Yellowjackets did not look back holding the lead for the final 13 minutes of the second half with the Saints eventually falling 77-63.

How It Happened
The Saints would get on the board first with a layup by Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) to go up 2-0 early. The Saints would battle with Superior for buckets the whole half with defense being the marquee. St. Scholastica would have eight players score in the half with Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) leading the team with seven points. Neither team would be able to make a run with there being 17 lead changes in the first half with the biggest lead for either team being three points.

The Yellowjackets (15-7, 12-1 UMAC) ran into foul trouble halfway through the first half, but the Saints would be unable to capitalize. The Yellowjackets would head into the half with a small 32-31 lead over the Saints.

The defensive battle continued on to start the second half. Neither team would gain a lead greater than two points for the first eight minutes of the second half. With 12:46 left in the second half Superior went on a 5-0 run to gain its largest lead of the game 50-45. Ander Arnold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) would get to the free throw line and convert on both to bring the score within three, 50-47.

However, the Yellowjackets answered back with a 7-2 run in the next minute and a half to go up 57-49. Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) converted a layup to bring the Saints' deficit to six, but Superior extended its lead to as large as 11 with 4:38 left in the second half. St. Scholastica would get the UW-Superior lead down to six on two different occasions, but the Saints shot 2-of-7 in the final minutes and fell 77-63.
